I did not like anything about my stay in this hotel, it was awful! I was disappointed because it was not safe, it was loud and stuffy.
It was in an extremely unsafe area, not very clean, and stuffy.
Rate per night of $20/night. Right value for a bed/night in a 2-bed shared room.
Pretty bad on cleaniness, safety and ambiance.
If you wanna know why I finaly enjoyed this place, read what I did not like but at the beguining of my time in San Fran. I met so many people here, great experience for who wants to live that way, maybe backpaper.
Here is the real world of San Francisco, this is confusing when you arrive in the sixth street with all the homless. Just don't show your money, try the busy walk, and stay cool. I never had a problem in this area and even by night, which seems as friends of San Fran told me (who I met in a great pub up this street on left), the worse area of San Fran. Just one morning, "What the fuck are you looking at me like that !!" I just answered in my way, I never seen him again. So to resume, yes the area is confusing but not as dangerous, in my opinion and if you respect the rules it should be fine. The hotel is not so clean, but staff is really nice, internet is free, breakfast included, a grocery just at the corner of the mina street. It is closed from Powel Street, the San Francisco museum of modern art, and certainly other things, I was not interested in market street. Enjoy using public transport, get a city pass which can be expensive but then all muni's transports are free. By night, I went at the pub just at the corner on Mina and sixth street listening poems slam, then the pub Anu if I remind well (there is a sign with an arrow), a bit farest but esay walking, the supperclub.
The bedding seemed clean.
The staff, with one exception, was unfriendly and seemed to be put out by my calling to add another night to our reservation, checking in, checking out or asking any questions. The bathroom facilities were dingy, unkempt and needed updating to have any sort of comfort. The neighborhood itself was frightening - a police officer told us that the surrounding area was full of drug addicts and that some of them lived in this hotel/hostel. Whether or not that was true, it certainly scared us a bit, and we decided to cancel our second night reservation after an unsettling night of police sirens and loud fighting within the hotel. Perhaps the hotel should have a better relationship with the area, especially law enforcement, so the police don't continue to frighten their guests. I would not stay here again.
there was a gunshot at the evening........
We just liked the Wi-Fi, so we could book another place to stay.
Didn't like the shared bathroom. The room smelled cigarettes smoke and weed. It was a really bad neighborhood with gunfire and so on.
If you are vegan or dairy intolerant, there isn't much to eat at breakfast.
The low point in our Summer trip in the US and Canada was staying at this hotel. Welcomed at the door by a steel jail gate and a miserable young female receptionist who never smiled once in the 4 days we stayed in San Francisco, things did not get much better with the dodgy surrounding area outside. I have stayed in some budget hostels, hotels and camping sites before but they have mostly made that little effort in friendliness to make up for the lack of facilities - this was most certainly not the case here. The showers and toilets even when cleaned seemed dirty and unhygienic, there was no soap dispenser in either also. Do yourself a favor and book into a hostel if you want to save some cash, avoid this place.
The only thing I did like about The Pontiac Hotel was it was close to place I needed to go.
Rooms are dirty, bedclothes is old and not clean. There are no bathrooms in the rooms! Shared bathroom was dirty too, and there were no soap in it. And for this scanty service I paid about $80. I will never stay in this hotel again.
Very central location and a good breakfast.
The hotel is very central, but in order to get there you have to walk through the worst and most dangerous section of San Francisco.
no bathrooms! Was not a double room. Misled, left right away, but still had to pay
The hotel was well located just a 5 min walking distance from un Bart Station. The room was quite confortable with big and confortable bed. The room is also away from noise which is good in the city center. However there were some pitfalls with my stay there: (1) the neighborhood was quite scary, with some guys smoking hash in the streets nearby (2) The wireless strenght did not reach all rooms, the hotel ad says it has wifi but doesn't specify that it doesn't cover all rooms. Besides, my computer was unable to log in the wireless, I requested to reset the router/ find a solution but the stafff could not help.
The shower in the third floor was everything except clean (too many rooms use the same shower). The furniture and ceiling lamps in the bathrooms seem very old. The price paid by the room is fair given the location of the hotel, but the confort is not adequate. An improvement could be made by improving bathrooms (I.E. with ceramic tiles for the floor/ adding extra-showers).
It's cheap, and also close to sf downtown
It's not very comfortable and clean, escpecially the bed
downtown, free wifi room downstairs was cool
not so safe neighborhood, shared shower wasnt pleasant
Staff was very polite, rooms, restrooms and corridors are cleaned, breakfast was very delicious and was given on time. Location is comfortable. Very good hospitality and modest environment of hotel allow coming back to this place during the visit of San-Francisco!
Restroom and the bathroom were one for a corridor (or floor), not private
